| The cover invites you to enter a different culture, and the quest into the background of the characters has you in its grip from the start. If anything the daughters are not quite as interesting as the mothers, but that's minor, it's a wonderful insight into Chinese psychology and society. How will a close-knit group of exiles react to the Americanisation of their families? All the major themes of dislocation, loss, adjustment and trans-generational identity are here, but I could visualise every one of the Club!
